Kickstarter o’ the Week!

This week’s Kickstarter o’ the Week (the first in months, I believe /o\) is about that thing that people are getting all hot and bothered for these days.

SCIENCE!

Jim Ottaviani, who previously teamed up with loads of lady artists to teach the world about loads of great lady scientists, has now teamed up with Natalie Nourigat and public radio to teach the world about their own minds.

A comic book about consciousness?

The idea seemed so crazy… so perfect.

But why? The public radio program To the Best of Our Knowledge is producing a six-hour radio series on the science of consciousness, featuring interviews with many of the leading experts - neuroscientists, cognitive psychologists, philosophers, writers, and artists.

We already had a stellar guest list: Oliver Sacks, Richard Davidson and Eric Kandel, to name just a few. But we also wanted to do something entirely new to make all these tricky ideas more approachable. A comic book!

And not just a comic book as a clever gimmick, but an imaginative story using illustrations to explore some of the deepest questions in science: How do our brains work? Are animals conscious? What about computers? Will we ever crack the “mind-brain problem”? And what does all this brain science tell us about the most personal question of all: Who am I?

Who is going to make this happen? We were thrilled to find our talented comic book collaborators, writer Jim Ottaviani and artist Natalie Nourigat. They’ll create a wonderful story to complement what we do on the radio: examining a big subject and making it accessible, engaging and fun. They are ready to start working.

BUT…

We need YOU to help fund it!

We call To the Best of Our Knowledge “a radio magazine of ideas.” It’s a Peabody Award-winning radio show, distributed by Public Radio International, produced at Wisconsin Public Radio, and aired nationally. We use in-depth interviews, storytelling and sound-rich pieces to explore big ideas.

The comic book and the radio series are both called “Meet Your Mind: The Science of Consciousness.”

My Boyfriend Is a Monster Vol. 6: Wrapped Up In You, art by Natalie Nourigat

Staci Glass feels cursed - whenever there’s a crisis, she’s stuck in the middle. Now her best friend, Faith, has a new hobby, and Staci conjures up the courage to go along. They join a trio of wannabe witches for a magical ceremony in an Incan history exhibit. Their chanting is loud enough to raise the dead, it seems. Why else would a shriveled-up mummy go missing - and a mysterious and gorgeous Incan prince suddenly appear?

ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?

sugarbooty:

tally-art:

New fan art for Fringe, inspired by an interview with Jasika Nicole in which she expressed her #1 wish for season 4: Astrid having and firing a gun! (I can’t find the video now, but this interview expresses a similar wish.)I want this, too! Make it so! It’s been nagging at me since season 2 that we almost never see Astrid out of the lab, let alone in action-action.In any case, the description for the Astrid-centric episode, Making Angels (Feb 3), sounds really promising. Can’t wait!
Original art available on my blog.

from a wickedly talented comic artist/illustrator that i had the great pleasure of meeting last summer!

Multiversity Comics named Natalie Nourigat as one of their creators to watch in 2012!

Nourigat has a lot going on in 2012, with her diary comic Between Gears coming out in February from Image Comics as well as a slew of other secret (as of now) projects that we’ll hopefully see from her this year. For those that don’t know her, Nourigat is one of the more talented lesser known creators in the industry, with energetic art that is very effective at storytelling as well. Plus, she is an absolute killer at commissions. I highly recommend checking out her work if you haven’t yet. Even if you don’t, I think it’s highly likely you’ll be seeing a lot more from her in 2012.

Periscope has a new member.

periscopestudio:

As of 2011, Periscope Studio boasts two dozen talented artists and writers all tucked into one busy downtown office suite. Our membership list has been closed for years, but we’re proud to announce that we’ve brought aboard one of the most talented emerging cartoonists in Portland: Natalie “Tally” Nourigat.

Tally is already known in the comics and illustration world for her beautiful and distinctive work. Her lush linework, unique manga-inflected style and sprightly sense for gesture and composition make her art a definite standout, and her magnificently professional attitude makes her a pleasure to work with. We’ve been huge fans since we met her as a student in 2008, when it was immediately clear that she was destined for big things.

Fresh on the professional scene, Tally is already hard at work providing art for two graphic novels, in addition to keeping up with her burgeoning portfolio of illustrations and self-authored comics (including autobio webcomic Between Gears chronicling her last year of university). We look forward to her classing up the joint in 2011! Allow Tally to bring a little sophistication into your own life by checking out her work at RandomProduction.com or by contacting her at Tally@farbeyond.com, and join us in welcoming her to Periscope Studio.
