Who defends the powerless against the GREEDY and the CORRUPT? Who protects the homeless and poverty-stricken from those who would PREY upon them in the DARK OF NIGHT?

When those who are sworn to protect us abuse their power, when toxic government calls down super-human lackeys to force order upon the populace…finally, there is a force, a citizen’s army, to push order BACK.

Let those who abuse the system know this as well: We have our OWN super humans now. They are not afraid of your badges or Leagues. And they will not be SILENCED.

Castle Waiting vol. II: Definitive Edition HC by Linda Medley

THE SECOND VOLUME OF THIS CLASSIC FANTASY, NOW IN AN EXTENDED AND IMPROVED VERSION

With its long-awaited second volume, Linda Medley’s witty and sublimely drawn fantasy eases into a relaxed comedy of manners as Lady Jain settles into her new life in Castle Waiting.

Unexpected visitors result in the discovery and exploration of a secret passageway, not to mention an epic bowling tournament. A quest for ladies’ underpants, the identity of her baby son Pindar’s father, the education of Simon, Rackham and Chess arguing about the “manly arts,” and an escape-prone goat are just a few of the elements in this delightful new volume. The book also includes many flashbacks that deepen the stories behind the characters, including Jain’s earliest romantic entanglements and conflicts with her bratty older sisters, the horrific past of the enigmatic Dr. Fell, and more.

Originally released in a slightly shorter version when the series ceased publication, this new edition includes over 60 pages’ worth of brand new additional story and epilogue, and the entire book has been re-lettered in a livelier, more inviting style for an even more engaging reading experience.

It’s a light week so the rest aren’t below a cut!

Plus Jain has a heart-to-heart with Chess involving their past, their future, and footstools… and another close encounter with the ghost leads Jain to question Mr. Finny about it, to no great effect…

Vote on the first LMC book club book!

Fantastic!  The response has been great and I’m really pleased.  I didn’t get any new suggestions for books, but I thought of a few, and I think, in the interest of giving people enough time to get their hands on the book we do choose, we should lose no time in doing so.  So here are the suggestions (I’m providing links to where to find/buy them so you can more easily consider your budget):

  • A Distant Soil vol. 1: The Gathering by Colleen Doran - “The story of a young girl, Liana, who is born heir to an alien religious dynasty and is the most powerful psychic being in the universe! In Volume One: The Gathering, Liana and her older brother Jason escape the cruel captivity they have known most of their lives only to encounter a warship sent by her father to assassinate her!” Readily available used and new from Amazon and new from In-Stock Trades. Also serialized online as a webcomic.
  • Finder: Sin-Eater (vol. 1&2) by Carla Speed McNeil - “Jaeger is a finder, or aboriginal detective. He’s gotten involved with an old friend’s ex-wife, only to discover that the old friend isn’t really out of the picture and appears to be dangerously crazy. A tale of conflicting loyalties in a science fiction setting full of talking dinosaurs and sentient toasters.” Available in the new Finder Library vol. 1 (including two further story arcs) on Amazon and In-Stock Trades, in their original separate trades, and in a hardcover from McNeil’s website.
  • Castle Waiting vol. 1 by Linda Medley - “A fable for modern times, Castle Waiting is a fairy tale that’s not about rescuing the princess, saving the kingdom, or fighting the ultimate war between Good and Evil — but about being a hero in your own home. The opening story, “The Brambly Hedge,” tells the origin of the castle itself, which is abandoned by its princess in a comic twist on “Sleeping Beauty” when she rides off into the sunset with her Prince Charming. The castle becomes a refuge for misfits, outcasts, and others seeking sanctuary, playing host to a lively and colorful cast of characters that inhabits the subsequent stories, including a talking anthropomorphic horse, a mysteriously pregnant Lady on the run, and a bearded nun.” Available on Amazon and In-Stock Trades.
  • Starstruck written by Elaine Lee - “Centuries in the future, Earth has been reduced in half by a nuclear war. Humanity has emigrated out into the universe, colonizing worlds and interacting with aliens. Various regimes have held power, most recently The Great Dictator. After his overthrow by revolutionaries, a power struggle rages on between his heirs -the Bajars- and the revolutionary leaders -the Medeas. The story follows the various pawns and rivals in the game, in evolving stages of their lives and of the scheme, as they all eventually meet and collide.” Available on Amazon and In-Stock Trades
  • Cairo written by G. Willow Wilson - “A stolen hookah, a spiritual underworld, and a genie on the run change the lives of five strangers forever in this modern fable set on the streets of the Middle East’s largest metropolis! This magical-realism thriller interweaves the fates of a drug runner, a down-on-his luck journalist, an American expatriate, a young activist, and an Israeli soldier as they race through bustling present-day Cairo to find an artifact of unimaginable power, one protected by a dignified jinn and sought by a wrathful gangster-magician. But the vastness of Africa’s legendary City of Victory extends into a spiritual realm — the Undernile — and even darker powers lurk there…” Available on AmazonIn-Stock Trades, and TFAW.

And you’re welcome to make more suggestions in the Disqus comments to this post. So make your pick!

ETA: The Poll will be open until Tuesday night so that people have time to either order the book and get it by Nov. 1, or so they can get it when they go to their LCS on Wednesday.

Both powerhouses of epic comics story-telling, Linda Medley and Carla Speed McNeil are going head-to-head this round.

Tournament Tuesdays: Round 4!

Sorry for the delay, life has made very little sense today and this will probably technically be posted on Wednesday.  On to the contests!
